<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica"; font-size: 12.0pt;">The Johannesburg People’s Pride movement was founded on the principle of disobedience towards the status quo of privileged myopia within the pride movement around issues of violence against the Black body across the full spectrum and scope of our South African society. We move from the premise that unless our bodies are liberated from the social, economic and political conditions engineered by the confluence of white-supremacy, capitalism, heteropatriarchy and ableism, not one of us can claim to be free.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "helvetica"; font-size: 12.0pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica"; font-size: 12.0pt;">In this regard we stand in solidarity with the #RUReferenceList protest that is unfolding on campus at the university currently known as Rhodes in Grahamstown, South Africa, a movement that exposes the lack of due representation, process, and protection of rape victims and survivors in our higher education institutions and legal system, particularly as it pertains to the Black body.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "helvetica"; font-size: 12.0pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica"; font-size: 12.0pt;">As we see it, the #RUReferenceList protest openly and publicly challenges the status quo of complicity in the face of endemic rape culture on campus. It also challenges the hostility of the institutional response against victims and survivors who attempt to seek justice and protection against the crimes of rape, sexual harassment, and abuse.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "helvetica"; font-size: 12.0pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica"; font-size: 12.0pt;">Indeed, the overwhelming majority of victims and survivors will not even attempt to seek justice because the criminal justice system at a societal level, in general, and in our higher education institutions, in particular, do not exist to believe, centre and support them. Instead, at the very most, they exist to protect the reputational interests of the state, the institution and the perpetrators of violence against our bodies.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "helvetica"; font-size: 12.0pt;"><br /></span></div>
</div>
<div style="font-family: 'helvetica neue'; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica"; font-size: 12.0pt;">The aftermath of the release of the #RUReferenceList exposed for all to see this institution and our society’s patriarchal commitment to perpetrators of violence over those of us, their victims. It exposed, for all to see, the duplicity of this Home for All which punishes those of us who stand up against sexual violence on our campuses, on our streets and in our communities.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "helvetica"; font-size: 12.0pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="font-family: 'helvetica neue'; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica"; font-size: 12.0pt;">This is not the first time the demands for a robust and zero-tolerance institutional response to handling sexual harassment and rape that centres victims and survivors have been put before university administrators, nor will it be the last. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "helvetica"; font-size: 12.0pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="font-family: 'helvetica neue';">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica"; font-size: 12.0pt;">If our institutional systems fail to protect rape victims from repeated acts of violence through dissuasion, negligence, indifference, ignorance and re-victimisation, then those systems are to be disobeyed and challenged in a manner that calls attention to their failure. </span><span style="font-family: "helvetica";">As long as rape victims are being asked to be patient with, and obedient to an institution and process that recreates their experience of violence and abuse, they have a right and are duty-bound to stand up and say NO MORE!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica"; font-size: 12.0pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica"; font-size: 12.0pt;">We stand with the community of activists, <a href="http://bit.ly/1SGS55L">students</a> and <a href="http://bit.ly/1SGS3uC">staff</a>, in their demands for the university’s administration team to stand down on its criminalisation of student activists through the invocation of disciplinary proceedings against them, the invitation of police presence on campus and through court interdicts.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "helvetica"; font-size: 12.0pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica"; font-size: 12.0pt;">We stand with the community of activists in their demands for investigation into those named in the #RUReferenceList, and all further reports of rape and sexual harassment.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "helvetica"; font-size: 12.0pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica"; font-size: 12.0pt;">We call on the Minister of Education, Council of Higher Education (CHE) and Higher Education South Africa (HESA) to engage Institutions of Higher Learning across the country on the implementation of sexual harassment policy.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "helvetica"; font-size: 12.0pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica"; font-size: 12.0pt;">In particular, we demand <a href="http://bit.ly/1SGV26q">an independent inquiry</a> to review the scope and magnitude of sexual violence and harrassment on campuses across South Africa. We demand that this inquiry investigate the incidence of sexual harrassment, assault and rape on campuses, the frequency with which these are reported, and whether investigations are fair, effective and are sensitive to the needs of complainants and survivors. We demand that this begin with the university currently known as Rhodes.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "helvetica"; font-size: 12.0pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica"; font-size: 12.0pt;">The Johannesburg People’s Pride Movement recognises the #RUReferenceList project as a central thread in the movement towards the decolonisation of our institutions of higher learning and society as a whole.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "helvetica"; font-size: 12.0pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica"; font-size: 12.0pt;">We are ever-mindful of the fact that white-supremacy, capitalism, heteropatriarchy and ableism are all mutually reinforcing systems of power, and that their collective demise, is the sole condition for our collective liberation from struggle and oppression. Their collective and total demise is, and must continue to be the singular project of this generation and those still to come.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "helvetica"; font-size: 12.0pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica"; font-size: 12.0pt;">We strive for the freedom to be, and the freedom to be free from harm. We strive for all freedoms for all people now!</span><br />

<span style="line-height: 21.4667px;">The Johannesburg People’s Pride Movement is excited and proud to announce its third annual progressive protest-celebration for justice. We have come far since that seminal moment in September 2012, when our Black sisters and leaders in this queer revolution for justice interrupted the white Johannesburg Pride Parade in the leafy suburbs of Rosebank to demand the observation of a moment of silence to contemplate the state and scope of injustice that especially operates on those of us whose bodies are Black, woman, disabled, migrant and poor, and were beaten, driven over and expressly told to “go back to [our] lokshins.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #141823; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21.4667px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px; text-align: justify;">
It was in that moment that we named white-supremacist, capitalist and patriarchal exclusiveness in queer organising spaces as an aberration in our struggle for justice. We were categorical then, as we still are now, that in all our work, we would be led by feminist, anti-racist, anti-ableist and anti-capitalist politics. At our inaugural protest celebration in 2013, as well as our second in 2014, we asserted and proved that our politics must and can be infused with enjoyment, and our enjoyment suffused by our politics, because the personal is political.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #141823; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21.4667px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="line-height: 21.4667px;">Regrettably, we have to announce that owing to unforeseen technical difficulties, our post-march Queer Celebration Concert, at which celebrated queer and allied artists and performers including Nothende, Moshe Ndiki, and Nakhane Toure were confirmed, must be postponed to mid-December.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="line-height: 21.4667px;">We will, however, be proceeding with all planned activities leading up to and including the GLOW in the dark march.</span></div>
<br />
<div style="background-color: white; color: #141823; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21.4667px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">

Tomorrow, we will be proceeding with our third protest-celebration. We will be reclaiming the streets of Hillbrow and the night. We will be marching to demand justice for all bodies that occupy this unjust society. We will be drawing particular emphasis to the struggles and resilience of trans-bodies in South Africa and the continent. We will be stomping our feet in celebration of queer anti-apartheid activist, Simon Nkoli, and those Black progressive leaders of the Gays and Lesbians of the Witwatersrand (GLOW) who, in organising that first ever Queer Pride march in Africa in 1992, on the route we will be marching on, knew then what we know now: that none of us can be free unless all of us are free.</div>

As we rise together to condemn this egregious violence, and show solidarity with and support for our foreign-born guests, parents, lovers and friends, we would also put it on record that these acts of violence come as no surprise to us but, in fact, index a deeper and more systemic problem of structural, material, psychological and physical violence that we as South Africans have failed to face and address head-on over the last 21 years.</span></div>

In our broken heterosexist society, queer bodies are deemed unworthy of dignity, protection and life because of how they transgress sexist rules about how we must present ourselves and who we can fuck. Similarly, the bodies and livelihoods of foreign nationals are the ready targets of violent scapegoating by nationalists, cultural chauvinists and criminal opportunists who are made by an unequal and inequitable society that has its foundations in over three centuries of white supremacist and capitalist violence.</span></div>

We did this with a firm understanding and a clarity of purpose that unless all bodies - queer, poor, landless, Black, disabled and foreign-born - are free from all violence, then none of us can ever claim to be free. In a broken society such as ours, we recognise that “stabane" and “kwerekwere” are but synonymous slurs used to establish and maintain the systems of violence and oppression used to sustain our common enemy which is white supremacist capitalist heteropatriarchy.</span></div>

<br />
<br />
<div>
The <a href="http://peoplespride.blogspot.com/">Johannesburg People’s Pride Movement</a> celebrates the<a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Alternative-Inclusive-Pride/801384713264199" target="_blank"> emergent resistance</a> against the exclusionary and elitist culture of Cape Town’s annual Pride celebration. From the moment of our inception, in 2013, when we took on the project to boycott gay parades and reclaim Pride, we acknowledged that a Pride that unifies all LGBTIAQ people anywhere was and remains impossible if it does not reflect the diversity of the people of South Africa and actively campaign for the enjoyment of all freedoms for all people NOW!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It comes as no surprise to us that what sits at the heart of this challenge to the legitimacy of Cape Town Pride is its exclusion of the Black, the disabled, the landless and the poor. Indeed, what should be expected of a programme that situates itself in the affluent suburb of Green Point, where its activities must be paid for and its political agenda is centered around the freedoms we know can only be truly enjoyed by a few? What happened with Johannesburg Pride in <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hnxip-T_Hnw">2012</a> and, now, with Cape Town Pride in 2015 only confirms that in the same way that there are two worlds in South Africa - one that affirms white, affluent, men above all else and another for the rejected and dejected rest - there are two worlds for LGBTIAQ people in Cape Town, Johannesburg and everywhere that queer bodies are to be found.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We remind all progressive LGBTIAQ people and allies that while the inequalities that characterise our society remain, there can be no freedom for queer people. Our vulnerability to violence as LGBTIAQ people does not emerge out of a vacuum, but is a direct consequence of our vulnerability to violence because we are women, because we are poor, because we are Black and because we are landless and discarded in the vast violent ghettoes that span from Orange Farm to Blikkiesdorp. In the same way that there was little to celebrate in the lush high-walled suburb of Rosbeank while violent evictions continue to happen in Hillbrow, there is little to celebrate in the non-poor only clubs of Green Point while the indignity of shitting in a glorified bucket toilet remains a reality for scores in Khayelitsha.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We say phambili to our comrades who will protest Cape Town Pride, demanding a broad-based community driven people’s movement! They will say you are mad Black queers not because you are out of touch with reality, but because they fear your capacity to imagine a reality in which we deliberately and decisively dismantle white-supremacist capitalist patriarchy - even in the queer spaces that claim to represent us.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Like our audacious, mad Black queer comrades in Cape Town, we are resolved that Pride is not an event, but <span style="color: #141823; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, lucida grande, tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif;">a movement requiring collective efforts from individuals, organisations, communities, allies and families. We are unwavering that it cannot and must not be allowed to be owned by a privileged few.
</span></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<br />
<div>

<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: white; color: #141823; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: auto; text-align: left; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: auto; word-spacing: 0px;">
<div>
The Johannesburg People’s Pride Movement pledges its support to the building of a progressive queer alliance of people in Cape Town that will reclaim a Pride that is for the people. We urge all comrades and friends in Cape Town to visibly occupy and assert their presence in<span style="line-height: 1.45;"> <b>Green Point, Traffic Department Parking Lot, 10:30am, 28 February 2015</b>.</span></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We urge all progressive LGBTIAQ people and allies from Cape Town to Johannesburg and everywhere in-between and beyond to stand together in boycotting commercialised gay-parades that delegitimise our struggles and reclaim our Pride!</div>

the constitutional freedoms we can only assert through expensive court actions,
our lives are overly-determined by violence. Because we are women, our
availability to assault and rape is drastically increased both in the workplace
as well as at home. Because we are sex-workers, we are deemed unworthy of the
State’s services and protection from violence because we are considered amoral
criminals. Because we are disabled, we are invisibilised by an ableist society
not interested in our justice. Because we are poor, we are denied a voice and a
choice because these are only heard by those with access to the money and the
land we were, and continue to be, dispossessed of. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

capitalism. While we continue to live in a capitalist state where an elite few
own the means of production, we will continue to be divided by this insidious
force which manifests itself in ableism, white supremacy and heteropatriarchy.
If we are to break the shackles of our oppression, we need to rise up against
these forces and collectively dismantle the stranglehold they have on our

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
The Working
Group of the Johannesburg Peoples Pride Movement (JHBPP), are doing the work of
implementing the collective vision for a Johannesburg Peoples Pride, as
articulated in the manifesto and mandated by a mass meeting of this movement. As
a movement we are constantly aware that there are many areas for our collective
growth and governance. We have been very attentive to how we work and have,
with movement and ongoing engagement, acted to nourish the values and
principles which underlie our politics and ethic. This is evidenced by the
first mass meeting that produced our manifesto which is <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">a living document, a commitment to change, the promise of
transformation</i>; to our organising committee meetings which are open to all
and are spaces for discussion and implementation.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
All
decisions are made by full consensus, all ideas are debated and discussed with
equal measure, all our short-falls are exposed, accounted for, and ways forward
that are responsive to these are proposed and decided on by all of us who form
the collective and who are committed to making the space work. In the last year
we have struggled with capacity and have therefore fallen short as your
committee to these ideals. We aspire to these and call on all comrades and
friends to join the call in continuing to reclaim a PRIDE of POWER, of
PERSISTANCE and of POLITICS.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
Both
prior to and after the first Johannesburg Peoples Pride March on 6 October 2013,
a number of statements and questions have been raised on various online platforms,
directed at the movement (through its Working Group).This document serves to
outline a few responses and open up discussions on the various issues raised. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Our Name<o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><br /></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
The
formation of JHBPP is a direct result of the number of acts of resistance
against an exclusionary LGBTI parade that has marked JHB for the last number of
years. Peoples’ Pride represents a radical break from the commercialised,
racist and classist JHB gay parade. Here, we raise the level of what we demand
of each other within LGBTIAQ organising, what we demand of our communities and
workplaces, and what we demand of the State. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
We
are on the margins of society, as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered,
Intersexed Blacks, Women, Migrants, Workers, Disabled People and all those
unlisted here, and yet suffer the burdens of not fitting into the “model person”
“model family” or “model citizen”. Most of us spill into and out of these
identities simultaneously and, for full freedom, require that all of these oppressions
be addressed simultaneously. Most of us do not live, work and interact in Queer
friendly spaces, and need those spaces to transform. We recognise that unless
all of us are free, none of us will be free.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
This
Pride is an All Peoples Pride, as opposed to the some people (wealthy, white, privileged)
pride. Our LGBTIAQ identities are front and centre within this movement,
together with the other identities that we occupy. Not above, not below, but
simultaneously. The choice to present as the people represents all of these
complexities. This, by no means, makes our space less Queer for the benefit of heteronormative
comfort, but expands our articulations for the benefit of freedom for all.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Which Pride should I attend? Why do we have
so many Prides and why can we not all unite?<o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><br /></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
The
JHBPP movement works hand in hand with all Prides which are politically
orientated and have a progressive agenda. The organising committee has used as
a guiding document our collectively-drafted manifesto. In addition to many
civil society organisations, collectives and individuals; some of the founding
members of JHBPP are Soweto Pride, Ekurhuleni Pride and Vaal Pride. There have
been a number of other Pride protests/celebrations to emerge in Gauteng and
other parts of the country which have taken to the politics of claiming the
streets for all. We demand of ourselves<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>the existence of multiple sites of struggle, defiance and the claiming
of space and therefore see the multiplicity of prides as something to be
celebrated rather than to be seen as negative fragmentation. Unfortunately, there
has also been an emergence of Prides that re-enforce the exclusionary politics
that we struggle against and re-enforce difference and discrimination.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
In
our view, these are spaces that re-enforce single issue politics as going
against the spirit of our movement. These spaces are hierarchical, oriented
more toward opulence and expensive partying, hosted in inaccessible spaces for
the majority of people, and require material wealth as entry. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
We are
reminded that spaces that endorse a capitalist agenda - such as those
intimately tied with corporate wealth - are not for the people and instead
serve the interests of profits over people.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
We
believe that through all of our bodies, the JHBPP should act as a radicalising
force for change, asking the uncomfortable questions and seeking answers that
advance radical transformation. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
We
continue to ask, if a pride expresses itself as non-political, if the space and
entrance aren’t free, if profit-driven corporations are sponsors, if there are
VIP areas: then who is this Pride for? We ask who pride is for if it does not
articulate clear anti-wealth politics and does not recognise and work against
the effects of race, class and gender as oppressive forces within all spaces
including those of LGBTIAQ people.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
Our
movement believes that diversity of voice and contestation in terms of
ideologies within the broader LGBTIAQ communities is necessary. We do not view
ourselves in competition with other Prides, yet will continue, <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">because</i> of our politics, to be critical
of all Prides, including ourselves. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;">

<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><br /></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
This
date falls within the 16 days of Activism of No Violence Against Women and Children.
We will again reclaim this moment as an activist moment and not a moment for
the state and corporate entities to pay lip service, yet again, to our
struggles against violence (while daily committing acts of violence against the
majority of the population).<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
In
conclusion, our struggle has suffered the restriction of being viewed as a
struggle primarily for the right to be intimate with who we want, without the
fear of harassment and violence, and the rights to be free from violence
directed at us on the basis of our sexual orientation and gender identity. This
movement is one that recognises these two issues as very important in the
experiences of all LGBTIAQ bodies, but also acknowledges and demands the
recognition that the oppressions we experience as LGBTIAQ people are
accompanied and exacerbated by a host of other oppressive forces that restrict
us and others from being alive.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">

Call to Action</h2>
<h3>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Johannesburg People's Pride March for Freedom and Justice</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
5 October 2013, 10:00 AM</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Constitution Hill</div>
</h3>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Peoples Pride Movement would like to invite all people with a desire for a free</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
and just society to join hands, feet and bodies-take to the streets of Johannesburg</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
and demand a safe and free South Africa for all of those who live in it.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We are calling on all people in and around the margins of what is acceptable and</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
good. We are calling on all people that normative society deems outlaw, all of us</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
who are not free. Our sexual orientation, our race, our class positions, our genders,</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
our geographic locations, our bodies with disabilities, our refugee status and many</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
other factors work together and are used as a basis to exploit and oppress us and</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
place us on these margins.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A proud people are a defiant people. A people that say: choice of sexual orientation, choice</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
of work, choice of identities can never, in our world, be a basis for discrimination. A</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
people that say: society is built for the materially and structurally privileged, and that</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
this society is not one that we wish to live in. A proud people is a people that will lift</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
up their hands and fists in struggle.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In reclaiming our pride, we will march together and demand:</div>
<br />
<ul>
<li style="text-align: justify;">Erotic justice;</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;">Freedom from all forms of violence and discrimination;</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;">Universal access to quality healthcare, including sexual and reproductive health services;</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;">Decriminalisation of sex work;</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;">Fair and just working conditions and employment opportunities;</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;">Equitable redistribution of land;</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;">Universal access to housing, sanitation, water, and nutrition;</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;">Universal and quality education.</li>
</ul>

New Organising Committee to Organise a People’s Pride in Johannesburg on 5 October 2013</h3>
<br />
Johannesburg, 20 May 2013<br />
<br />
A meeting on 18 May of the recently formed organising committee of about 30 individuals decided on a broad programme of action for the annual lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, asexual, and queer (LGBTIAQ) Pride in Johannesburg. Johannesburg Pride 2013 will consist of public art installations, performances, exhibitions, direct action, workshops, and debates over the months leading up to a march on October 5.<br />
<br />
The organising committee emerges from two public meetings hosted by the Forum for the Empowerment of Women (FEW) and the One in Nine Campaign during April and May 2013 attended by a broad range of activists and other members of the Johannesburg queer public.<br />
<br />
The meetings discussed issues concerning the manner in which Pride has been organised in Johannesburg in the recent past. They identified the ways in which previous Pride events have reinforced racial, class, gender and other social hierarchies, overlooking the problems confronting a vast majority of LGBTIAQ individuals and communities in and around Johannesburg and in South Africa as a whole, and ignoring their daily struggles for adequate housing, safety, education, and access to public services such as transportation and health.<br />
<br />
In a society still largely stratified along racial lines, this failure translated into Pride events that catered, often explicitly, to affluent, mostly white individuals. This deliberate de-politicisation of Pride and emphasis on festivities for the affluent is a slap in the face of individuals from economically marginalised communities, particluarly black lesbians and gender non-conforming people, whose lives are characterised by high levels of structural and interpersonal violence. In privileging corporate sponsorships and promoting the market value of such events, Pride ceased to be an inclusive space that was safe and accessible to all members of LGBTIAQ communities. <br />
<br />
The meetings also generated a “Pride manifesto” that lays out the principles and vision for a “People’s Pride,” including anti-racism, anti-capitalism, anti-sexism, anti-ableism and the positioning of LGBTIAQ struggles within broader socio-political and economic contexts and struggles in South Africa, and globally. Pride is envisioned as a widely inclusive and decidedly political movement for social justice. <br />
<br />
The organising committee, which is mandated to organise Pride according to the manifesto, is in the process of creating a People’s Pride calendar; the events and actions will serve to:<br />
<ul>
<li>Build solidarity with other politically oriented Prides in the greater Johannesburg region and beyond, such as Soweto Pride and Ekurhuleni Pride;</li>
<li>Educate and conscientise communities about the struggles that shape our experiences of being queer in South Africa;</li>
<li>Honour the contributions and resilience of queer Africans; and</li>
